No. Contrary to popular belief, it does not mean tone deaf (although many of the people that sing Karaoke seem to be). Karaoke typically removes only the lead vocal(s) from recordings, allowing the singer to overdub the original voice.

Karaoke is actually Japanese for "empty orchestra"

kara 空 = empty

オーケストラ o-kesutora (got shortened to オケ (oke) = orchestra

And that's what you get, kara (empty) oke (orchestra) = karaoke
