I've heard this question a lot among my friends, and I have to admit that I don't think Sly and the Family Stone did a version of 'Papa was a Rolling Stone'. A classic rock radio station out of Toronto plays The Temptations version, and I have won a couple of bets over the artist. I think the falsetto part throws many people for a loop, as they believe it as a female singer. I also believe that many people may be confused by a version that circulated on 'Limewire' that listed Sly and the Family Stone as the artist, and in this era of MP3 players, everyone takes the error as gospel. I could be wrong, but I have tried to find a version done by The Family Stone, and each time it is 'The Temptations'....

Motown Song writers Norman whitfield and Barrett Strong wrote the Temptations song Papa was a Rolling stone in early 1972. it was a number one hit on the billboard charts and won three Grammy awards in 1973
That song was called "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and it was recorded by the Tamla Motown group, The Temptations, it wasn't a Rolling Stones recording.
