Did John Denver suffer from depression?

Denver battled depression for some years.

He was also an alcoholic, and due to failure to remain abstinent he had no medical certificate, and was thus not authorized to pilot an aircraft, at the time of his death. No alcohol or drugs were found at the autopsy, however, and his crash was deemed to be accidental, due to a peculiarity of the controls in the airplane he was flying at the time.
