There are a lot of references online, but I've never found it.
It was recorded by dozens of people across genres and generations. The original was written and recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker in 1968.

No. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version does sound like Jim Croce's voice, but it's not him. Croce had many "character songs," but "Mr. Bojangles" wasn't one of them.
