Brian Jones was the original Lead. Jones died in 1969 and Keith Richards moved across from rhythm guitar to full time lead; the job he was doing more and more as Jones' interest in the band waned.
Brian Jones (guitar) placed an add to start a band in 1962. Ian Stewart (piano) answered.Mick Jagger (vocal), Keith Richards (guitar), and Dick Taylor (bass) were already playing on their own together in amateur band but joined up with them instead. The resulting group called themselves The Rolling Stones. After Dick Taylor left, they played with a couple different bassists and drummers before completing the line-up with Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watt (drums) in early 1963. In mid-June 1963, Ian Stewart was demoted from band member to road manager. He still played with the band (for another 20 years) but not as an official member.
The group's earliest line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bassist) and Charlie Watts (drummer).

There are many Musicians, however there's only 4 people accepted today, Mick Jagger , lead singer, guitar on occasion,Kieth Richards Lead guitar, Ronnie Woods back up guitar, I feel he's the best, however Richards has SENIORITY, finally drummer Charlie Watts. These are the big 4. past members, Brian Jones xylophone , Mick Taylor, Bass Guitar . Ronnie Woods joined the band in 75 , so theoretically 3. He's not an original member, but is VERY loved " Ronnie B Good " hope this helps
The only two musicians that have performed with The Rolling Stones that have died are Brian Jones and Ian Stewart. Therefore the living members of the band are Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Bill Wyman, and Darryl Jones who isn't officially in the band but has performed with them since 1994.
