It is easy to state that Rick James and Charlie Murphy were friends. Charlie Murphy is briefly mentioned in countless biographies about Rick James (Including a VH1 Bio as well as the real version of the E! True Hollywood Story). And Rick James did associate ("hang out") with Eddie Murphy from time to time. And considering that Charlie was part of Eddie's entourage, it is very possible to state that Rick and Charlie were deeply acquainted if not friends. I believe the real question that people really want to know is that, are the "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" sketches on the Chappelle's Show, true? The answer is a debatable yes. But it is easier to say that it may be a slight exaggeration of the truth. Everywhere it is mention on any related wiki page (Chappell Show, Charlie Murphy and Rick James) it always says this: "Murphy recounts his misadventures as part of his brother Eddie's entourage". Also there have been many interviews with Rick James and Charlie Murphy, before and after the sketch was made, where either one was joking about it. The only clearly false information in the sketch was about the ring. While both state that Charlie Murphy was hit with the ring, the real ring itself looks nothing like the one used in the sketch. The real ring was square and came out to a diamond shaped point, as opposed to the sketches "UNITY" (written out on the ring) ring. While there are no pictures of the real ring on the web, if you watch the VH1 Behind the music you will see what the real ring looks like.
