Mom's illness reason for Brooks' new hit Jack Hurst - Tribune Media Services Garth Brooks' mother, Colleen, has just received a ``100 percent'' favorable report on her treatment for throat cancer from physicians at UCLA, Brooks reports. Her medical situation was a primary reason her son recorded the hot new single ``It's Your Song,'' which recently broke a record by becoming the highest-debuting single in the history of the country hit chart of the Radio & Records trade publication. The song hit number four in its first week on the chart. Garth's mother's problem was the reason the singer was shown the song by one of its two co-writers, Benita Hill. Herself a cancer survivor who also had gone through the same kind of trauma with her own mother, Hill was a co-writer of the Brooks smash ``Two Pina Coladas.'' Brooks says she showed him the song as a friend seeking to help him deal with his pain. Brooks says the song hit him hard, and he went to producer Allen Reynolds to ask whether Reynolds thought the song was really that good or whether Brooks was just feeling it because of the situation with his mother. He says Reynolds, who already had heard it, replied that he thought the song was a hit and was just waiting for an appropriate moment to recommend it. The initial single from Brooks' brand-new ``Double Live'' album, ``It's Your Song'' is sufficiently ambiguous to be able to be taken as a moving thank-you to Brooks fans. ``And (to) God,'' the singer adds. Brooks lost his mother, Colleen, to cancer a couple of years ago. While the loss has been devastating to the superstar, Brooks says he learned a great lesson from the late Hollywood movie producer Dawn Steel that helps him make it through the holidays. "Dawn Steel taught me that life is truly measured by how much you live after you're gone, and my mom lives and Christmas is probably the greatest day," he says. "We used to drive home Christmas from Tulsa--from (wife) Sandy's parents' --and we would get there at seven in the morning and Mom would be standing knee-deep in wrapping paper and I'd go, 'What are you doing?,' and she'd go, 'I was up at five.' And she wouldn't wait. She was like a little kid. She ripped into all her packages and that's how she was, so that's what Christmas is for us, is what my mom made Christmas, so we make sure our kids are the same way and that we're that same way, so she's still there, probably more at Christmas than any other time."

I met Garth Brooks' parents some years ago when he came to Mesa, Arizona, to play baseball in a summer league. They were delightful people to meet. I remember his father saying I might have heard of his son, who sang but wanted to play baseball that summer. I asked him who he was and he said, "Garth Brooks". I said to him that yes I had heard of him, he was a superstar. His dad said he wasn't any different than the rest of his boys. We then discussed the family and it turned out I had gone to the same University as one of his boys. His mother didn't say much other than how proud she was of her boys. I got the impression she was quite ill. I hope I am wrong but I wouldn't be surprised if she has since passed on.
