Why was edward going to kill himself in new moon?

Spoiler Aleart: If you haven't read new moon yet dont read this. Alice saw Bella jump off the cliff but she never saw Jacob save Bella. So Alice tells Rosalie that Bella is dead not knowing that she really is alive, then goes to Forks to see if she can help Charlie. Rosalie calls Edward and tells him that Bella is dead. After hearing this Edward goes to the Volturi and asks to be killed. Alice sees all this while shes in Forks and tells Bella that Edward is going to kill himself, so Alice and Bella go to Voltura and try to keep Edward from commiting suicide. Bella is successful and Edward comes back. They both were having a hard time staying away from each other.

During Jacobs time at the house Edward rings and masquerades as Carlisle. Jacob picks up the phone. He's asked where Carlisle is by Edward and responds by telling him he's at the funeral.Edward believes it's the funeral of Bella in light of the news Alice told him. He attempts suicide. Upon news of this surfacing Bella and Alice leave for Italy to find Edward who is begging a Volturi to kill him. The Volturi deny his wishes so he attempts to enrage them by stepping into the sun and revealing the existence of Vampires to all. Bella arrives just in time and prevents Edward from following through with his threats.

Technically, he didn't.She went to Italy to bring him back. And she did that because she thought that he was gonna kill himself! OMG! DONT DO IT EDWARD! DONT! :) hehehe
