This is the first I have heard of such a ban. My guess would be because of one or more of the following reasons:

  • The novel is very gloomy and depressing. It does not have anything remotely like a 'happy ending'.
  • The long section of the novel describing how the 'hero', Winston Smith, is gruesomely tortured in the Ministry of Love, which is the headquarters of the secret police.
  • The sex scenes between Winston and Julia.

Improved answer:

The real motive of the ban is that the book is considered pro-communist, but it actually is anti-goverment in general. It's a good book too. Everyone should read it.

The school districts are clearly ridiculous if they had banned 1984 over the sex scenes. The sex scenes in General don't resemble "pornography" but political defiance. The book is Actually Anti -government and is a pretty dam good book if i say myself. Everyone should be required to read it.
