Due to the improved performance and light weight to thrust ratio, brushless motors have made greatly improved the performance of RC models. Old style brushed motors have contact points that rub together in order to conduct the current to the stator. Needles to say, these parts rubbing together is an inefficient way to run an electric motor. Brushless motors use a special speed control that rotate the current directly to the stator, eliminating brushes. This direct link to the stator also produces more electric current to be effeciently supplied to the motor and greatly increases the power and performance. RC planes with brushless motors, in addition to the advances of Lipo batteries, when used as directed, can now achieve the vertical performance once only available in gas RC planes.

What is the difference between a brushed and a brushless RC motor?

The main difference between a brushed motor and a brushless motor, (besides the differences implied by the names), is that the brushed motor uses an electromagnet system as the rotor surrounded by permanent magnets (and sometimes more electromagnets), and the brushless motor has a magnetic rotor surrounded by electromagnets. There are many aspects about the two types of magnets and electromagnets of both types of motors, which could fill several pages if everything was covered - but I'll just describe the basic important bits here.Names and descriptions of main parts:Electromagnet> a coil of wire, wound around a metal form, will magnetise the form when energised by electricity.Rotor> the entire rotating part of the motor that includes the output shaft and the "technology" that reacts with the surrounding "technology" to create motion. The rotor's "technology" will be either a series of coils, or one or more magnets.Stator>the magnetic field-producing "technology" that provides the opposing magnetic field needed to oppose the magnetic field of the rotor to create motion. A stator's "technology" will be either a series of two or more magnets, or a series of coils.Commutator> a series of two or more segments of copper, or other conductible metal, mounted around a form side-by-side, with each segment electrically connected to one or two ends of any electromagnet's coil. This arrangement of a conductor rubbing on a rotating conductor is similar to another system called "slip rings", but commutators have multiple segment whereas a slip ring is a solid ring.Brush> an electrically-conductive solid (metal or carbon) that is physically softer than the commutator, used for transferring electrical energy to power the electromagnets while rubbing on the metal segments as they rotate. To minimise the energy loss from its conversion into heat due to contact resistance, the brush is pressed firmly against the commutator using a spring or a strip of spring-metal to provide enough force. The "brush" can refer to the actual metal or carbon block on this component, or the entire component itself that includes the arm, or the spring in the case of a carbon brush. Brushes are usually used in sets of two, or less commonly, four.Brushed MotorThe typical DC (direct current) motor has its coils mounted on the rotor to create the magnetic field that opposes the stationary stator's magnetic field produced by multiple permanent magnets. Some brushed motors use two or more coils as a stator for more rotational power, some of which may also run on AC. In either case, rotation is caused by the "like" poles of the stator and rotor, the polarity (North or South) changes as the rotor spins as the commutators switch positive and negative, to negative and positive at the correct angle of rotation to maximise the opposing magnetic forces. * Note: The word "commutation" means "switching", which describes the result of the action of the commutator's segments alternating the power and polarity of the rotor's coil and thus the polarity of the magnetic field.Brushless MotorThe brushless motor is basically the opposite of the brushed motor, where the rotor consists of one or more permanent magnets and the stator consists of two or more coils. In this case, the "commutation" (or switching) must be done outside the motor in an electronic circuit. To visualise the way this motor works, picture a magnet on the rotor having its North pole on one side and the South on the other. The coils surrounding the magnet are electronically switched in sequence, creating a rotating magnetic field that runs around in a circle - similar to the visual effect of "chasing" lightbulbs around an outdoor sign. This rotating magnetic field pushes or pulls the magnetic rotor around in a circle to create motion. Pros and cons of BRUSHED versus BRUSHLESS motors:>Brushed motors are inefficient due to the power losses from imperfect power transfer through the commutator system.>Brushless motors are much more efficient without these losses.>Brushed motors have short lifetimes due to the wear of the brushes and commutators.>Brushless motors do not use commutation parts so they do not suffer from this.>Brushed motors require more complicated methods for speed control, lowering voltage reduces speed but also reduces torque (rotational power). Newer methods using PWM (pulse width modulation) is an improved method, but is still not ideal. Torque vs. speed is such that torque drops sharply at lower speeds.>Brushless motors are very simple to control speed, rotational power (torque) vs. speed characteristics are opposite those of brushed, where torque is highest at slow speeds and drops off with higher speed. Specialised types of brushless motors are designed for very high speeds, but they require unusually excessive current to do so.>Brushed motors run much too fast to be useful to most applications, requiring a gearing system to reduce this speed (torque increases as a side benefit) to make the motor match the application.>Brushless motors excel in this regard, as they are very frequently used directly without gearing, although some applications requiring high precision or additional torque will use a gearing system.I'm sure I've missed a few things here and there, but hopefully I've covered enough to helpful and provide a basis for understanding the fascinating and important world of these types of motors.Peace,Dave

What is the fastest electric RC boat on the market?

Most everyone will imply that you mean RTR, correct? Of rtr's, brushless electrics will be the fastest also the most expensive. Some of the more popular ones are ProBoat's BlackJack 26 brushless, fastech brushless, their brushless elam, and their new brushless boat. Aquacraft is also another very popular brand name. Their sv27 and UL-1 brushless boats are very fast. Aeromarine puts out a few high priced models and minicat racing has some models that are extremely fast. When looking for the "fastest" there are several factors to consider. Hull type, battery type, motor, speed controller, prop, and water conditions. For example, a hydro hull will be faster than a v-hull but you better be on very calm water with a hydro or it go airborne; where as the v-hull will be able to handle rough water the best. Also a v-hull will cleave the water and turn sharper that a flat hull will which will slide in turns unless a turn fin is added. For power Lithium Polymer aka LiPo are lighter and put out more current to weight than Nickel Metal Hydride aka NiMH's do and last much longer, however they are also more expensive. The advantages of NiMH are that each cell is at 1.2volts at charge while LiPo cells are usually at 3.7v per cell. For instance a 6 cell NiMH standard pack is 7.2v while a 2 cell LiPo is 7.4v. The advantage comes into play when choosing power setups. For example, Lets use the SV27. If we have 2 sv27's one with 2 7.2v NiMH packs and one with 2 7.4v LiPo's the LiPo boat will go at least 5-7mph faster than the SV27 with the NiMH's. But add a cell to each of the NiMH packs making them 8.4v each and the LiPo SV27 will no longer be the fastest. If you were to do the same thing to the LiPo's by adding a cell, now each LiPo pack is 11.1v combined for 22.2v!!! The SV27's motor and speed controller will fry. If you like building then you can get your custom boat to go as fast as the hull can handle. The current world record is a rigger hull at 146.7mph!!! I'm currently building a 40inch V-hull with a large Brushless electric set up. The motor is a 12 turn 45mmX77mm Brushless watercooled motor with a 120amp water cooled speed controller or ESC. I'll power it with a 8s LiPo (2 14.8v 5000mAh 35c 4s1p LiPo's in series) for a total of 29.6volts!!! I'll be using an Octura x452 prop. I'm expecting over 70mph!!! I also have a ProBoat BJ 26 BL I'm running 2 7.4v 4000mAh 25c 2s1p LiPo's. My BJ goes about 45mph with the LiPo's. I've also modded an old Cen Baja that came with a 550 brushed motor. I added a 775 brushed motor with a Navy 60amp brushed ESC. This boat moves at about 35 to 40mph with 36mm 2-blade prop I added to it using a 14.8v 3000mAh 35c 4s1p LiPo pack. In conclusion, if you are looking for the all in all fastest mass production Brushless r/c boat I'd guess it would probaby be the New Aquacraft UL-1 as it is a hydro hull running on 2 2s1p 7.4v 25c-30c burst 45c-50c 3300mAh - 5000+mAh LiPos. I heard about 47mph!!! I don't own one YET so I can't say for sure.

Does brushed nickel go with stainless steel finish on appliances?

The answer to that depends on your taste, and also the color of the brushed nickel. Each individual has their own way of seeing the world, and some people will like the two together, or say that they look similar, although to me, brushed nickel often looks less shiny. But I like that. :) To help you decide if you like the combination of brushed nickel and stainless steel, you could: --Buy the product and see if you like the look at home, but ask about the store's return policies first. --You could also photograph the object in question and take that home to compare with what you have.
