India and Indonesia wanted to join the non-aligned movement because they did not want to be seen as aligned to any economic block. They wanted to be free thinkers. They didn't wanted to be tied to either the East or West blocks.
Technically, they would've been nonaligned, though many of these "nonaligned" countries actually were aligned; they just weren't formally part of NATO or the Warsaw Pact.
