The character of ALF was portrayed by a live-hand puppet operated primarily by Paul Fusco, the main puppeteer and voice of the character.
Although he was the principal puppeteer, Alf's movements were accomplished by combining the efforts of 3 individuals.
Paul used one hand to control ALF's mouth while the other was free to control one of the puppet's arms. A second puppeteer, named Lisa Buckley, remained under the stage (there were numerous trap doors built all over the set) and operated the other arm. A third person named Bob Fappiano, was in charge of controlling ALF's facial and ear movements via a radio controller. Working together, Alf was able to move 'effortlessly'.
On the rare occasion an action scene had to take place i.e, running, falling and jumping, a dwarf actor named Michu Meszaros would shoot the scenes wearing an ALF costume.
