I was told many years ago by a former Westminster master, also gay, that Hepburne Scott had been killed in his room by a rent boy. As far as I know, as one of his former charges, Hepburne Scott never preyed upon the pupils at Westminster. He was a nice man, not at all elitist or snobbish given his aristocratic background. But he did used to wear his OE tie (a different colour but remarkably similar to the OW one)!
He was old school which meant that he was very much in the closet, as were many other masters of that bygone era.
