The Great Lakes, which form part of the International Boundary between Canada and the US, contain approximately 20% of the world's fresh water.

Traditionally there are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario. Hydrologically, however, there are only four. What we know as Lakes Michigan and Huron constitute just one body of water.

The Great Lakes- Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.

================================================

1. Most geographers would disagree with the inclusion of Lake Michigan in the above list, although it is technically correct. The bodies of water known as Lakes Michigan and Huron constitute, hydrologically, just one lake. Techically, therefore, there are really only four Great Lakes. The International Boundary between Canada and the US does not, however, run through any part of what is commonly known as Lake Michigan.

2. There are, in fact, dozens of lakes that form part of the boundary between Canada and the US. In addition to four of the five Great Lakes, notable are Lake of the Woods, Rainy Lake and Lake St Clair. Along the Maine border the International Boundary runs through roughly a dozen small lakes on the St Croix and St Francis Rivers. In addition, in the Quetico region the International Boundary runs through approximately 40 small lakes.

3. Along the 45th and 49th parallel portions of the International Boundary, the line crosses a few lakes. However, those lakes do not, in themselves, form part of the International Boundary.

Lake of the Woods, Rainy Lake, Lake St Clair, about 40 lakes in the Quetico Park area, and around half a dozen or so along each of the St Croix and St Francis Rivers. Were you expecting me to rattle off just the four Great Lakes that do so?
