Yes. Not too far from the beginning is the death of the Wicked Witch of the East by Dorothy's house landing on her. More towards the halfway point is the Shakespearean climax of the Wicked Witch of the West dying from Dorothy throwing a bucket of water on her.

Neither the book nor the movie give her any name other than "The Wicked Witch of the West." Gregory McGuire's book Wicked names her Elphaba. It comes from the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz's initials: L F B. If you sound it out, it sounds like Elphaba.

Originally, there were four Wicked Witches in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz. But the Wicked Witch of the North was replaced by the Good Witch, in the northern purple country of the Gillikins. She was unnamed in the original 1900 book edition of The Wizard of Oz. But in the 1902/1903 stage version, she had the name of Locasta. Likewise, the Wicked Witch of the South was replaced by Glinda the Good Witch, who ruled from her Red Castle in the northern red country of the Quadlings. The Wicked Witch of the East lived in the eastern blue country of the Munchkins. The position of eastern ruler came open when she was killed by Dorothy Gale's farmhouse landing on top of her. And the Wicked Witch of the West lived in her Yellow Castle, in the western yellow country of the Winkies. The position of western ruler came open when she was killed by Dorothy Gale melting her with a fatal bucketful of water. So the Witch was succeeded by the Tin Woodman.

Death for two and survival for one describes what happens to the Witch in The Wizard of Oz. The title references both a 1900 book edition and a 1939 film version. In both renditions, the Wicked Witch of the East dies from Dorothy Gale's house landing on her, the Wicked Witch of the West perishes from Dorothy throwing water on her and Glinda the Good Witch survives as Dorothy's friend and mentor.

During the musical Wicked, majority of Glinda's time is spent at the fictional Shiz University. Shiz is located in the city of Shiz in Gillikin, the northern province of the Land of OZ.
