No. Contrary to popular belief, no passengers were locked in their cabins or any corresponding corridors during the sinking. There were barriers to separate the classes, but these were meant mostly to prevent the spread of infectious disease, and were about waist-high. In an emergency, it was possible to climb over them.
There are a few reasons why many third-class passengers died, one being that the ship lacked a PA system. The only way to communicate to the passengers that the ship was sinking was to send a steward around to knock on doors and tell people to put on their lifebelts. This was no easy task, as there were only a few stewards and stewardesses for all 700+ third-class passengers (as opposed to the many available for first and second-class passengers). Not only this, but many did not speak English, which created another barrier in communication.
Another factor was the layout of the ship itself: not even the crew knew their way around the maze-like corridors, which caused chaos and confusion when it became obvious that the ship was doomed.
Yet another factor came from the passengers themselves. Because of their cultural backgrounds and low social status, many were used to following orders, and so waited for a crew member to come and tell them where to go. For some, those instructions came far too late, or not at all.
While no passengers were kept below against their will, there is evidence to suggest that about 20 or so crew members were locked in their cabins. They worked in the a la carte restaurant, and were of Italian and French descent. They were kept inside because it was believed that they would rush the lifeboats. None of them survived.
