They are working on getting down to 12 contestants from 36 by having voting for the top three in each of three groups of 12. That will be done the first week of Mar 2009 and the Judges will add three Judges choices from the unselected 27 to complete the 12 competitors for American Idol. Next weeks show will be on Wednesday and Thursday due to the President requesting airtime for Tuesday

No, American Idol as a show still has its contract with fox. Many people think Idol will not see more than this season and the next because now we have lost Paula and are loosing Simon after this season.
The show will end on Wednesday May 23 2012. They did have a Judge's save for Jessica Sanchez and then did not send two people home the next week.
It appears to end a week earlier on May 17 2012 but the original schedule was for a week later on May 24 2012 before Jermaine Jones the 25 year old from Pine Hill, NJ left on March 14 2012 for Outstanding Warrants. So if they want they can do a judge's save and then not send two people home the next week.
