After Lily came back to NYC after her split with Marshall she lived in a dumpy apartment. One night she needed a place to stay after there was a problem with the apartment and asked Barney if she could stay with him. They fell asleep watching late night T.V. The next day Barney brought a woman over to stay the night and the next morning Lily came in and the girl thought that Lily was Barney's wife. Barney came up with a plan to get Lily to pretend to be his significant other so she could kick the girls out in the morning. Because his apartment was a typical bachelor pad, they had to pack up the movies of his and bought pillows and other brick-a-brack to make it more believable that a woman lived there.
