How the Grinch Stole Christmas! first aired on CBS on December 18, 1966. It continued to appear annually on CBS until 1987, when the rights were acquired by Turner Broadcasting. Turner now airs the special several times during the holiday season on its networks, including Cartoon Network and TNT.

The movie - short which first aired on CBS on December 18, 1966 became a Christmas Season staple, broadcasting annually on CBS until 1987. After being purchased by Turner Broadcasting System, it played on TNT, Cartoon Network, and The WB Television Network several times between November and January each year.

At the present time Grinch is the first special of the Christmas Season, airing on ABC and kicking off all the other Christmas Classic Specials, starting shortly after Thanksgiving. It's original 26 minute length has been trimmed to fit the new time formats with extended commercial breaks. Grinch is one of the few specials first airing in the 1960's still available on network television.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! was released to VHS in 1994, DVD format in 2000 and high definition Blu-Ray Disc in October 2009.
