Winter in South America is opposite winter in the northern hemisphere. When we are playing in the snow in the northern United States or in Europe, people in southern South America are enjoying a warm to hot summer, just like we do in northern summers. Seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth relative to the sun. Because of the tilt, the Northern Hemisphere has longer days in the summer, shorter in the winter. When the north has short days, the Southern Hemisphere has long days, hence summer. At the equator, the day length does not vary - 12 hours per day every day. So there is no winter near the equator. It is always warm, never terribly hot, never very cold. Exception: if you climbed a mountain near the equator, you would discover "winter" near the top. The high elevation produces cold air and a freezing climate results - hence "winter". This is true anywhere. In Colorado, for example, you could be very warm and uncomfortable at the base of the mountains in the summer months. But by climbing to the top of a mountain, say 14,000 feet (4500 meters), you could find snow and be uncomfortably cold.

∙ 10y agoThe March Spring Equinox in North America equals the Autumnal Equinox in South America. So Autumn in South America is about March 20 to June 20th (dates can vary by a few days each year), or a day before the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Generally in the Northern Hemisphere we think of Autumn as the time when the leaves turn brilliant colors, and fall off the trees in late September, October, and early November. In South America that happens in late March, April, and early May.
