The time period following the Renaissance was known as The Elizabethan Age or less common although interchangeable, The Shakespearean Age. Named after the Tudor queen of England, Elizabeth I. 1533-1603, coronation 15 Jan 1559, Westminster Abbey. The lesser common term for the period after the European Renaissance, The Shakespearean Age was so called after the playwright, William Shakespeare, who composed his plays and sonnets during the reign of Elizabeth I. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest dramatist in English history.

In addition to Shakespeare's contribution to the cultural and literary arts of the day, the age is also known for The Protestant Reformation, which saw the breakaway from the Roman Catholic Church initiated by Elizabeth's father, King Henry VIII to evolve into what very closely resembles todays modern Church of England.

During this time, the English Navy emerged as the preeminent naval fleet in the world. The English colonization of the North American continent was underway in full swing during this time, led by explorers like Sir Francis Drake who circumnavigated the globe, 1577-1581. In 1588 the English Navy defeated the Spanish Armada, putting an end to the long-feared imperial ambitions of the Spanish court.

Francis Bacon, an English philosopher and scientist pioneered the concepts of modern scientific thought during the reign of Elizabeth I.

England emerged during the Elizabethan Age as the world's economic power as well. All in large part due to the victories secured by the English Navy as well as the rapid expansion of her colonies and the mineral and agricultural resources which they provided. This led to global trade routes which England would enjoy almost exclusive dominion over for the next two centuries.
