What was the purpose of Beauty and the Beast?

Many view it as a story to teach the moral that beauty is only skin deep and that what's inside a person counts more than what their appearance. But it's also been described as a story about marriage. Oftentimes women had arranged marriages and they had to leave their families to live with someone they didn't know anything about and might view as beastly or less than human. As they got to know their husbands they may begin to see them less as animals and more as human beings.
