Summary:
Originally specialized in rifle combat on his home planet of Kalee. He fought against another inhabitant group on the planet Kalee, the Huk, and amassed so many kills that he became something of a deity to his people. He left the planet after his mentor was killed by the Huk. It was at this time that he took the name of Grievous and joined the CIS.
During his time in the CIS, he met the former Jedi turned Sith Lord, Count Dooku. Dooku, sensing an opportunity in Grievous' rage, taught him the ways of lightsaber combat. A quick learner, Grievous became known as one of the greatest swordsman in the galaxy and sent many a Jedi to their doom.
Grievous gained much attention in the year 19 BBY, when he staged a daring assault on the galactic senate and kidnapped Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. The Republic Navy quickly responded. Two Jedi - Anakin Skywalker and his master, Obi-Wan Kenobi - infiltrated Grievous' flagship (The Invisible Hand) and rescued the Chancellor. During the conflict on the Invisible Hand, Count Dooku was killed by Anakin Skywalker, but Grievous managed to escape via escape pod to the planet Utapau.
Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to track the General to the planet Utapau, and with the help of the 501st Battalion (of the Clone Army), he flushed Grievous out and killed him after a brief but intense exchange of both lightsaber and blaster combat. The droid army (CIS) fell apart shortly after, crippled by the loss of their 2 leaders.
