The most common cause of death in deserts is by drowning. More people drown in the desert every year than by any other cause. Flash floods can quickly develop after sudden thunderstorms and can rapidly fill arroyos and streams to overflowing. People have little to no warning and can be quickly swept away and drowned by these sudden floods. Other folks are drowned when they attempt to walk or drive across a flooded roadway.
