The phrase is used to describe a victory where the weaker or smaller party wins over the larger or more powerful opponent particularly when the victory is unexplainable in any other way than with divine guidance. David killed Goliath with only a sling and stone yet God guided the stone which triumphed over Goliath's armour, brawn and bravado.

A David and Goliath struggle is usually any kind of conflict/struggle in which one side is extremely big/strong (at least in appearance) while the other side seems incredibly small, inexperienced, or weak (yet may not actually be such). This is based on the Biblical story of the shepherd boy David who, when no warrior was brave enough to fight Goliath- a literal giant who was the champion of the Philistine army- volunteered to do so. While he was laughed at, he used his sling to hit Goliath directly in the forehead- immediately killing him. David later went on to one day become king of Israel, and Jesus Christ himself is a descendant of David.

This an expression often used to refer to a contest between two sides which are very unevenly matched. For example, when a single person sues a multibillion dollar company, the resources of the company far outstrip that person, so the lawsuit may be called a David vs. Goliath struggle.

David. He was a simple farm boy, but killed the Philistine warrior giant Goliath with a sling and a stone. He then proceeded to chop of his head.
