It's pretty simple and straight forward. Although it is slightly different in every province.

From an Ontario perspective, there are 4 years of high school, and you need 30 credits to graduate and get a high school diploma. Ideally, 8 credits in 9, 10, and 11, and 6 credits in grade 12. There are certain compulsory courses that are needed, most of which are taken in grade 9 and 10. These include Science, Math, English, Gym, etc. There are different learning streams for most subjects. There is a wide variety of courses to take as well.
