THe cross is a symbol of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Tom Selleck was a member of Sigma Chi at USC. To the above, I have to say: I have done some professional work for Sigma Chi and have never seen the Lorraine Cross used. The cross on the fraternitys shield is a Crusaders cross (Templars under St. Clair) . If the USC chapter uses it the Lorraine) that might be different, but I haven't seen it on or in their work either. The Lorraine Cross was first given to the use of the dukes of Anjou by the Patriarch of Jerusalem during the 1st Crusades and has been a symbol of liberators since. The Lorraine Cross used on the ring Tom Selleck's Magnum character wore was similar to the symbol of the Free French Army of WWII. It has also been used by many professional soldiers and other special units including some of the French Foreign Legion. To many professional soldiers, the symbol represents the long historical tradition of the life long Christian warrior with ideals that go beyond borders, to a duty to defend and liberate those oppressed. The symbol was believed to be used by the forces following Joan de Arc against the English. For this reason it holds double importance in France.
