Pon-Vandu is a Tamil word which literally means Golden Beetle. It is a common name in Tamil for a group of beetles that belongs to genus Sternocera. There are about 41 known species in this genus around the world. Species like Sternocera basalis, Sternocera chrysis, Sternocera aequisignata are found in South Asia. The common English names for these beetles are Metallic Wood Boring Beetles and Jewell Beetles. Sternocera basalis can sometimes be seen in Pithecellobium dulceTree (Kodukkappuli in Tamil. This plant is not native to India, it is introduced). Sternocera chrysis can sometimes be found in Cassia fistula - Golden Shower Trees (konrai maram in Tamil). Sternocera aequisignata can sometimes be found in Acacia nilotica (Karuvelam in Tamil).
