If your talking about the Vocaloid song, it is possible that the widely known pv by SunzRiver (or yuuki) is based on the 1600's European freak shows. However, the original video by Machigerita himself only contains a picture of Rin Kagamine . It is the 3rd installment of a 4 part series.

This is the 3rd song in the series of 4. This is the order (that Machigerita proclaimed before his entries started to get deleted):
1) Steel Cage Princess (Miku finds herself in a land ruled by a evil queen)
2) Red Swamp Bottom (Miku becomes capture/enslaved and gets sent to "hell")
3) Dark Woods Circus (Miku and the workers hate their lives and want to get away from where they are)
4) Blue Ice Castle (Miku becomes suicidal and turns to death as a way to get out)

Also, coming out this month is a novel version of Dark Woods Circus written by Machigerita himself. Maybe if someone would translate it, the true meaning behind Dark Woods Circus would be revealed.
