colt 45 (His wife said it was a Colt 38 special which she sold at Auction, and the picture is a 38, but the next picture where Little Joe is laying down-that gun is a 45LC, you can tell by the barrel and the Cylinder which is bigger, the 45 hole takes up most of the metal. He did use other rented guns on the show, so apparently his personal gun was a 38, I seen one picture of a gun that was all engraved that was suppose to have been given to him by Hoss (Dan Blocker). Also the one sold had plain plastic type grips and on the show they were Ivory, hope this helps-Fan!)
I believe the handguns were Colts 38 and/or 44, the rifles were Winchesters.
I know one of them was an 1892 winchester in 44-40 because I own that gun.

The character Little Joe did not die on the tv series Bonanza. He was the only of the brothers to marry during the regular tv series. Michael Landon, the actor who played Joe Cartwright, died years later (July 1, 1991) suffering from pancreatic cancer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Joe_(character)
