She seems to have been into drugs for awhile -- most notably cocaine -- but I don't think she was ever actually an addict. She seems to give the drugs up fairly easily, which is something no addict could ever even hope to do. If you're a drug addict, giving up drugs is the hardest thing in the world, but it wasn't for her.

The drugs seem to be part and parcel to the abusive relationship she is in. When she decides to leave him, she leaves the drugs behind as well. She leaves him asleep in bed, and then she smears the cocaine all over the mirror, as if trying to destroy it. And then she leaves.

No addict would ever discard a big pile of cocaine like that. She would've taken it with her. She might've THOUGHT about leaving the drugs behind, or flushing them down the toilet, but if she were really an addict, she would've ended up keeping them.

When you're an addict, you just want to have drugs around, because knowing that you have them makes you feel safe and secure. Being addicted to a drug means that on a deep, instinctive level, you really feel that you NEED them to survive emotionally. You can't live inside your head without drugs. So, you just want to KNOW that you have a big pile of cocaine or heroin or whatever stashed away, that it will be there when you need it. You might be disgusted with yourself, you might wish you could throw them away, but you won't be able to do it.

A true addict would never, ever deliberately throw drugs away, unless the cops were breaking down the door.
