Johnny needed the gang for family love , just like must of the gang. johnny is like a little brother to the gang, hes innocent and gets along with everybody in the gang. Johnny is the pet of the gang and without Johnny the gang wouldst be the same as before. The gang are so close and they would feel like a bit of them is gone if Johnny died. You could say its foreshadowing aswell because johnny dies and then dally goes crazy(without johnny dally goes crazy and dies to)

Hope this helped

I see it as foreshadowing because it's showing that without Johnny, Dally went crazy and got himself killed. Ponyboy means that the gang is the glue that keeps Johnny together and Johnny is the glue that keeps the gang together. Without Johnny, the gang is torn apart because after Dally goes crazy.
