it means to stay who you are and don't change
There is no Johnny Curtis, there is Johnny Cade and the 3 Curtis boys: Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Darry.
After everything that has happened in the story Ponyboy finds a note from Johnny, that he had dictated to his nurse, in his copy if "Gone with the Wind". Johnny tells Ponyboy to "stay golden" refering to their previous conversations. This inspires Ponyboy to write his theme for English about all that has hardened to him in the last weeks. We then find out that the whole story was his theme.

"Life was one big joke to Two-Bit" (Hinton 10).
Oh, dude, the characters in The Outsiders have names like Ponyboy, Sodapop, and Two-Bit because they're cool like that. It's all about that rebellious vibe, you know? Plus, it makes them stand out from all the boring names out there. Stay golden, Ponyboy!

Johnny was intelligent in a sense that he saw the world as it truly was. He had analyzed the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and figured that Ponyboy was what was golden. Also, He was the only thing that Dally loved, his only weakness.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
What happened in chapter six is Ponyboy ran down into the burning church they were staying in for the past couple of days to go save the children because he probobly started it with his cigerette. They get the kids out but ponys arm catches fire but his coat saved him from any major burning, but got a bruise on his back from dally hittin him so hard. A beam that had caught fire fell on johnney causing him to catch fire completely from neck down,so he is in critical condition during this chapter, and dalley got his arm burned pretty bad but ok enough to fight in the rumble. Ponyboy is passed out for awhile, and at the end of the chapter he is reunited with darry and sodapop. Are you just using this to gett out of reading the book for school? It really is great, its my favorite book, i read it a few times a week.
