Hurricanes or cyclones as they are more commonly known in NZ, have a probabilistic distribution. And we may or may not get a severe one in a particular year.

The most severe ones are tropical cyclones that drift further south and affect our usually benign weather patterns.

There have been no lethal or alarming hurricanes in recent years. One of the most damaging to hit New Zealand struck in the year 1988. Therefore, one could say that "the hurricane" was in 1988.
