First, they were not going to the singing contest, but they got found out by some guards at the place they were leaving, so they had to go to the singing contest. They were wearing traveler's clothing, so the mom said that the cold air wasn't good for the throats. Well, they go to the contest, and escape to the abbey before the family's name was called out for first prize winner of the contest. The Nazis find out, and they go to the abbey, the nuns try to stall them, and then the family hides in this secret part of the abbey. They get found out by one of the girl's love, but the father asks him if he wanted to join them in their escape and the the boy wasn't made for the Nazis. Unfortunately, the boy does not want to join and instead, he calls out for the lieutenant. The family escapes in the old abbey car. The Nazis try to chase after them, but the nuns took out the engines of their car. The family escape, and they have to climb these mountains/hills to escape from the Nazis definitely.
NOTE that details of the history of the von Trapp family were altered for the musical, including: The von Trapps spent some years in Austria after Maria and the Captain married - they did not have to flee right away - and they fled to Italy, not Switzerland. See Related Links for more details.
In the movie, the family performs at a festival then quickly goes and hides and the monestary where Maria used to live. They were almost caught but quickly drove away. We then see two nuns admitting their sins. When asked what their sins were, they hold up car parts, while in the background you can hear the Nazi's cars failing to start. The movie ends with us seeing the family climb over the mountains to Switzerland.
They escaped just before the soilders came for them.

the Von Trapp family
The movie's von Trapp family in "The Sound of Music" is similar to the real-life von Trapp family in that both were musical, experienced political turmoil in Austria, and ultimately fled the country to escape the Nazis. However, the movie took some artistic liberties and altered certain elements of their story for dramatic effect.
