The most popular tourist islands are probably the Seychelles, about 800 miles north of Madagascar and 750 miles east of Mogadishu, Somalia. The Seychelles have recently been having problems with the Somali pirates taking hostages and demanding exorbitant ransoms, so go with a group, and hire an armed guide. The British Indian Ocean Territories (BIOT) including the island of Diego Garcia are generally off limits to everybody except British military personnel. These are about 1,000 miles south of the southern tip of India. The Maldive Islands have a pretty good reputation. India is pretty tropical, of course, and Sri Lanka is improving as a tourist destination since the Tamil Tigers surrendered. Going east from Sri Lanka across the Bay of Bengal, you find the Andaman Islands, and the islands of Indonesia itself make up the eastern boundary of the Indian ocean.
