A wave of immigrants moving to the cities of the Northeast. -Apex
A quick answer would be to point out two main things: 1) immigrants helped to rapidly expand the country by providing a source of cheap labor or by having large amounts of skill or wealth; 2) immigrants generally faced large amounts of discrimination from regular American citizens who were distrustful of their purposes. While laws and attitudes have change a lot in 130 years, immigration provided cheap labor for manufacturing during the industrial revolution and now does for the service industry, which enhances the American economy (and thus improves the lives of all citizens) by lowering the costs of goods everyone buys. Some Americans were resentful that immigrants took factory jobs and service jobs in the large cities. Some felt that immigrants caused unemployment. Because immigrants often do not complain about labor conditions, union workers sometimes felt that immigrants were union-busters.

The Irish Potato Famine would eventually over 1.5 million Irish refugee immigrants to America. This was the first major wave of poor (and relatively unskilled) immgrants to the then-50-years-young nation. This caused a lot of tension in the Northeastern cities, where established, well-off families were remiss to begin sharing their space with droves of unfashionable, poor foreigners. Were often overcharged for horrible living conditions and underpaid for what little work they could find. Many became sick or died from diseases like Cholera - but those who ultimately survived have contributed to American culture in many lasting ways.
In the 1800's settlers moved west for many reasons. For instance gold was a big opportunity and so was cheap land for immigrants. This caused a race to the west and the main reasons settlers moved there.

Many Americans saw new immigration as a threat and a surge of nativism resurfaced during the late nineteenth century, mainly in anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic sentiments. But more than religious prejudice underlay hostility toward the latest newcomers. In other words, people didn't like immigrants taking jobs away from natives by working for low wages. That caused the anti immigrants to join groups and terrify them until they left America.
