What kind of contemporary? Pop? Rock? Country? In general, the similarities are huge. The chord progressions found in classical music are a basis for most types of popular genres today. For example, the use of cadence chords (I, IV, V7) is often very similar.

In the romantic era all the romantic composers play romantic music. In classical era all the composers play Classical Music.

Really? I would never have guessed THAT.

The romantic era is the development of the classical era; while the baroque era depended on dissonance and complicated contrasting melody lines, the classical era has a more simple style to it, and depends on harmony instead of dissonance. The romantic era takes the same style of simple melodies and harmonic line, and lengthens and smooths the line, making for the rich beautiful melody that we associate with romantic music.

The only similarities are the notes, key signatures, and tempos. The differences are night and day as the two forms of music are each of their own distinct character and sound.
