There are very few similarities beyond some convergent features of their respective user interfaces. Their internal architecture is very different, differing from kernel models to shell integration to executable formats. A comprehensive list of similarities is neither possible nor useful, because it would consist mostly of obvious statements like "They are both operating systems" or "They both have graphical user interfaces, "They both include Web Browsers" and the like.

1. Both have a command line.

2. Both can treat system devices as files (ex. "COM" or "/dev/ttyS0" can both be written to and copied from).

3. Both have the basic concept of a batch file, or shell script. Linux supports far more advanced scripts, though.

Linux and Unix have many similarities, but Linux has many features that most Unices do not have, and some current Unix implementations (like Solaris) have some features that have yet to be implemented in Linux (like dtrace).

Some ways that Unix and Linux are functionally similar:

  • Both are capable of true multitasking.
  • Both run on a variety of hardware platforms.
  • Both are well-known for security and reliability.
  • Both are highly modular (one piece can easily be removed and replaced without breaking the whole system)
  • Both are capable of using both a command line and a GUI.
  • Both support multiple users, and support different privileges between users.

They are both multitasking; they provide built-in networking with TCP/IP as the standard protocol; both can provide a GUI and CLI.
