The Taj Mahal was built by an Emperor called Shah Jahan to remember his wife Mumtaz Mahal. She was his third wife, and as she neared death, the story goes that she asked her husband to build the most beautiful mausoleum in the world in memory of her. Shah Jahan was grief-stricken at his wife's death, so he honored her request. The Taj Mahal's construction commenced a year after her death, in 1632, and the main building was finished in 1648.
