The most essential events in the story are: Baby Simba's blessing ceremony after his birth, Simba's uncle Scar revealing and singing about that he's going to kill the king and the prince (as in his own brother Mufasa and nephew Simba) in order to become the king and his attempt to kill them both at once by tricking little Simba into a stampede of wildebeest and fetching Mufasa to save the child. Mufasa manages to save Simba but Scar still manages to kill Mufasa. Simba finds his father's body and Scar blames the death on the child's existence and manipulates him to believe that Simba's mother wouldn't understand, and into exile. (Simba had practiced his roar earlier and at one point it echoed mightily in the canyon he was in, and at that very moment the stampede stirred. Scar was aiming at this so that Simba would blame himself. In fact, Scar stirred the stampede with three hyenas.)

Later dying Simba is rescued by Timon and Pumbaa and the child starts to live with them. Years later the grown up Simba is found by his childhood friend Nala and told about how his uncle Scar has destroyed the kingdom and everyone are starving. The following night Simba is visited by his father's ghost who tells him he must take his place as the rightful king. Simba returns to his home and challenges his uncle Scar for the throne and though Scar tries to win by revealing to everyone that it was Simba's fault that Mufasa died, he makes the mistake of revealing to Simba that in fact he, Scar, killed Mufasa. Then he has to tell it to everyone and after a final battle, Simba wins and takes his place as the rightful king.

At the very end they show Simba and Nala's cub being presented to the Pridelands the way Simba was at the beginning of the film. According to the film makers in 1995 and 2003 on the Laserdisc and DVD's commentary track, this cub doesn't have real name and gender in its own film but the official sequel made it a girl named Kiara.

I believe the major event of The Lion King was Mufasa's tragic death.
