Nationalism was evident in numerous ways in Europe in the late 1800s. Perhaps the most obvious example of it can be seen in the heated rivalries over obtaining territories in the developing world, primarily Africa, as numerous European countries sought to increase their prestige and strength by establishing (or solidifying their hold of) colonies.

The primary examples of nationalism near the end of the 19th century are Japan, Russia, Spain and the United States. Japan sought more influence in the far east and Russia stood in their way. The result of this was the Russo-Japanese War. As that war was brewing, the US and Spain became entagled in Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico. The result was the Spanish American War.

The most prominent examples of ethno-nationalism were the unifications of Germany and Italy and the independence movements of Balkan states like Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria.
