The only major difference between the book and the film is that in the book, Mrs. Coates convinces Travis to shoot Old Yeller shortly after the dog fights the wolf and is exposed to rabies (during the incubation period), whereas in the film, Travis insists on waiting until Old Yeller develops symptoms before killing him. In the book Travis and Yeller had not fully recovered from the wounds they received from the hogs. Mrs. Coates and Bud Searcy's daughter Lisbeth had gone to burn the cow carcass and return being chased by the rabid wolf which is kept at bay by Yeller. Travis shoots the wolf as it is about to kill Yeller but in a cruel twist of fate is then forced to kill Yeller because he has been exposed to rabies will eventually become a deadly threat to the family. There is also the minor difference in that Old Yeller is bob-tailed in the book. Whereas, in the movie, he has a long tail that arches over his back (similar to the tails of Arctic sled dogs). Another major difference is that Old Yeller appears as a Lab/Mastiff mix, while in the book he is implied to be a Black Mouth Cur.

There are some major differences in characters and development between the book and the movie. Gump is not as successful in the book, nor is Jenny as bad. Below I have included a link to a site that compare the book and movie.
It is based on the book, but there are some differences.
Old Yeller had to be killed because he got rabies. However Travis eventually gets a puppy that was fathered by Old Yeller. He names the puppy Young Yeller.

Henrik is not in the movie, and neither is Phillip's father. The book begins in Curacao, whereas the movie begins on the ship. In the book, Timothy and Phillip stay on the cay for months, but in the movie, only fro days. In the book, Timothy attempts to get rid of stew cat, but not in the book. There are several more differences.
the book goes in more detail than the movie and its probably a helpful tool to watch the movie first than read the book

No, it's not. There are many significant differences between the book and movie/musical, such as many of the character's names, and many of the events.
No, he went to Kansas and then came back to his family at the end of the book\movie.
