They're like the homes in the U.S., Denmark, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, big and roomy. Most (modern) homes have a luxurious look to them both inside and out. Housing exterior design varies by region, just like in the U.S. They usually have 3 bedrooms and 1 or 2 bathrooms. Some have large yards, others don't have any yard. Some are 1 story others are 2, the ones I've seen are 1 story. Some have garages (separate or not) while others don't. Most if not all the Houses windows have iron bars, along with the front and back doors. People are now starting to up security by having aggressive watch dogs. And some(partially the wealthy) have hired police or watch guards within the gates of their home. Because of all the crime that happens in South Africa, virtually everyone has ADT. ADT is the most popular security service in the country. And Nearly everyone has either tall stone or iron bar walls surrounding their homes and some took it further by having barbwire and electrified fences. Which can make the house look even more expensive, even though the cost of living in South Africa is very cheap. I've heard people call them "The Fort House" or "The Fortresses of Safety". There are neighborhood watchers walking/driving around neighborhoods, making sure that people have closed their gates or will ask someone why are they walking around(cause that person could be a criminal or a entenchinal victim, and people rarely anyone walk around in Middle and even upper-class areas) and will try to give em lifts, and if it's to a house, they will make sure that the gates will open to see if you're not a criminal, before driving off. If you go out to the countryside, you will notice a near absence of "Fort Homes" , no gates and less ADT infested homes. With even bigger homes(in some areas) and a lot more land and still a cheap price, for the most part.

The housing ranges from terrible to really immaculate. Google Bishopscourt and Constantia for the latter and soweto and diepsloot for the former.
