A Horror film is driven by a villain (mortal, supernatural or otherwise) that kills/stalks the cast. Vampire films, zombie films and monster films are by definition horror films. Horror films are intended to scare the audience, make them feel uncomfortable and shine a light on the darker more perverse side of society. They air a good no. of horror movies on HBO. YOu can watch it and know the true meaning of a horror movie for sure. It surely is a kickass experience.

Solid writing and even better actors is a good start. The value of your script means nothing if you don't have the talent to convey the appropriate emotions and to make your audience invested in the story. In addition to this, you have to have an original idea to stand apart anymore, or at least an original enough spin of a pre-existing genre or sub-genre. You shouldn't have to rely solely on such amateur plot points such as sex, nudity, or even gratuitous violence for it to be really scary. For the most part, it is the anticipation of the horror that makes a film all the scarier rather than just throwing the blood and action in their faces at every turn. But at the same time, you don't want it to be too bloodless and violence free since your "horror" film will be referred to as a "suspense" or a "suspense-thriller". For it to be really disturbing, you have to hold off on non-essential deaths and things of the sort and really go for the gut when it comes to the moment when a character does die. Having a solid Makeup FX team will be essential if you want the horror that you are trying to convey to come off as real and not cheesy, and it would be in your best interest to get some downloadable editing software and FX software. Music, or rather a score, is incredibly important in setting the tone for terror so you will want to keep this in mind as well. And lastly you will want to get somebody who can actually film events or movies as opposed to someone who can just hold a camera and shoot. The trained eye of a person who is really into Photography will give your film more depth and feeling since the shots will be set up to go for maximum emotion and mood as opposed to just shooting anywhere that you can find.
