But Fran Stryker, the writer of the radio series told the producer he wanted to give the Masked Man an faithful Indian companion named Tonto because it was getting hard to have the Ranger only talking to his horse, Silver. The producers as WXYZ in Detroit said for him to go ahead -- and thus Tonto became a regular character.
