As a child I actually saw this horse. Along with the Buckskin and black and white Pinto ridden by Lorne Green and Michael Landon. As much as my research has been able to turn up the black horse was Quarter Horse or a Quarter cross. But this question deserves more research.
Hoss's horse was named Chub. Little Joe's horse's name is Cochise. Ben's horse is Buck, Adam's horse is unofficially called Sport.
Pernell Roberts (Adam) rode Beauty but Beauty was no cooperating so they picked another horse for him.
It seems that the buckskin colored horse that Ben Cartwright rode in Bonanza was the same horse that was used by Marshal Matt Dillon in the series Gunsmoke.
Ben rode a buckskin named Buck. Adam rode a 7/8 sorrel thoroughbred named Sport. Hoss or Eric rode a dark brown horse named Chubb or Chubby. Little Joe rode a black and white pinto named Cochise whom he often called Cooch.
No, Matt Dillon's horse was not named Buck. In the television series "Gunsmoke," Matt Dillon rode a horse named Buck. On "Bonanza," the character Ben Cartwright, played by Lorne Greene, had a horse named Buck as well. So while both shows featured a horse named Buck, they were not the same horse and belonged to different characters.
