The Strategic Defense Initiative (often nicknamed "Star Wars") was pushed by U.S. President Ronald Regan. The idea was to launch a series of satellites that could detect and destroy with lasers any intercontinental missiles that might be launched against the US . Reagan loved the idea even thought most experts thought it would take 20 years or more to realize, if it could be done at all. The Star Wars nickname came from the very popular Star Wars movies that were being shown in theaters at time.
