I think it's because before Stargirl came, they were like the mud frogs... dormant under the mud waiting for the rain. They didn't do anything. They didn't go to the matches, they didn't cheer for their team, they were just... sleeping. They weren't really living, I suppose.
Then when Stargirl came along, she was like the rain. And they all woke up when she arrived and they were truly alive :D She gave them school spirit and individuality and they reacted!
