Metropolitan France was historically inhabited by French (north-centre area), Occitan (south), Franco-Provençal (around Lyons, Savoy), Flemish (Dunkirk), Franconian (Lorraine), Basque (southwest), Catalan (Perpignan), Alemmanic (Alsace) and Corsican peoples. However, because of a homogenizing language policy, these ethnolinguistic differences have decreased and most of the languages other than French have been pushed to the brink of extinction.

In the last century Immigration has brought other ethnic groups to France -- most notably people from former French colonies such as Arabs, Berbers, Wolofs, Bambaras, Khmers, Malagasys, Vietnam-Cantonese and Vietnamese but also people from other parts of the world like Italians, Portuguese, Poles, Serbs, Croats, Albanians, Russians, Tamils and countless others.
